Errata for Introduction to Seismology

  1. p. 17, The phrasing at the bottom of the page, "...and there is no volume change..." seems to suggest that zero diagonal strain terms are required in this case. This is of course not correct; the only requirement for no volume change is that the sum of the diagonal terms is zero.
  2. p. 24, part (i) of problem 2.6. "...define two normal vectors..." should be "...define two unit vectors..."
  3. p. 32, There is a sign error in (3.39) arising from getting the curl backward. The correct definition of the curl is given in (2.17) and (A2.15). The right-hand parts of (3.39) and (3.40) should all be reversed in sign. Unfortunately, this error also propagated into the Rayleigh wave section in Chapter 8 (see below).
  4. p. 99, The f( ) in (6.37), (6.38), (6.39) and (6.40) should all be f'( ). Note that this does not affect any results since the f'( ) functions eventually all cancel out in matching the boundary condition.
  5. p. 105, line 21, "... looks like the diagram to the right" should read "... looks like the diagram to the left."
  6. p. 105, 11th line from bottom, "...because the sign differences..." should read "...because of the sign differences..."
  7. p. 107, first line after equation (6.60), "from (6.51)" should be "from (6.59)"
  8. p. 114, 7th line, "...transform of the t*(omega) function..." should be "...transform of the A(omega) function..."
  9. p. 134, 3rd line after equation (7.42), "...free to chose..." should be "...free to choose..."
  10. p. 137, The cos(theta0) terms in (7.65) should be negative.
  11. p. 139, 5th line of last paragraph, "(Fig. 10.17)" should be "(Fig. 7.17)"
  12. p. 141, Exercise 7.1, reference to Equation (7.18) should be to (7.17).
  13. p. 148, The two right-hand terms in both (8.19) and (8.20) are sign reversed.
  14. p. 149, (8.25) and (8.26) are sign reversed.
  15. p. 149, The B terms in (8.29), (8.30), (8.31) and (8.32) are sign reversed.
  16. p. 150, After (8.35), "a common factor of 1/beta^2" should read " a common factor of beta^2"
  17. p. 161, line 17, "toroidal mode 0T0" should be "toroidal model 0T1"
  18. p. 161, line 19, "toroidal mode 0T1" should be "toroidal model 0T2"
  19. p. 162, (E8.3) should be theta = -2 tan^-1(b/a). Note also that the phase shift for the reflected wave (phi_SupSup) must be -theta to be consistent with the sign convention for the phase shift used in (8.7) and (8.9).
  20. p. 167, In (9.4) and (9.5), the derivative of Gij with respect to x_k really should be with respect to (x_0)_k to emphasize that the derivative is with respect to changes in the source position x_0 (not the receiver position x). I'm not sure what the best notation to use for this is.
  21. p. 187, 4th line, "ruture" should be "rupture"
  22. p. 209, 3rd line, (Equation 11.2) should be (Equation 11.12).
  23. p. 215, Fig. 11.6, the y-axis labels should be negative numbers.
  24. p. 227, in Exercise 11.8, "Figure 11.7" should be "Figure 11.9"
  25. p. 233, In (A2.15) all of the u's should be v's.
  26. p. 234, In (A2.32) it should be atan(y/x) not tan(y/x), or the tan should be on the other side with the theta.
  27. p. 237, 2nd line below (A3.1), "grad dot phi" should be "grad phi" (see 3.25).
  28. p. 237, A3.2 to A3.5 do not properly include the fact that phi is dependent upon t. One way to fix this is to change the exponentials in A3.2 to A3.5 to exp(i*omega*(t-T(x)), and replace the line the mentions dividing out the exp(-i*omega*T(x)) factor to "dividing out the exp(i*omega*(t-T(x)) factor."
  29. p. 238, In (A3.13) T should not have subscripts.
  30. p. 238, last line of page, More properly this should say something like "...lengths short compared to distances over which velocity and amplitude changes significantly."
  31. p. 242, line 8, in subroutine LAYERXT, "irtr=0" for the constant velocity layer should be "irtr=1" to indicate that the ray passed through the layer.
  32. p. 252, Claerbout 1985 reference should list "Blackwell Sci. Pub" not "Blackman Sci. Pub."
Many thanks to Steve Day, Dick Hilt, Youshun Sun, and Ruedi Widmer-Schnidrig for alerting me to most of these.
