This International Association of Geodesy's Special Study Group (SSG) aims to develop the theoretical basis and methods for the production of a synthetic model of the Earth's gravity field, primarily for use in geoid determination. Such a synthetic model is currently unavailable to the physical geodetic community. At present, geodetic researchers have to rely on analytical error estimates, often based on observed data. Moreover, many of the discrepancies between the various gravity field theories are at the limit prescribed by the current data availability. A synthetic gravity model will avoid these scenarios and thus give an independent validation of the procedures used.
